Brain Injury Reception at The Speakers House a huge success

UKABIF and Chris Bryant, MP hosted a successful reception at The Speakers House in Parliament on 22nd May 2019. The event was attended by over a hundred people including many with a lived experience of brain injury as well as charities, support groups and those working as clinicians and academics.

Around thirty MPs made the time to meet their constituents despite a very busy day in parliament. They included Minister for the Treasury John Glen, previous Health Minister Steve Brine and stalwarts of the APPG for Acquired Brain Injury; Liz Twist, John Hayes, Carolyn Harris and Sharon Hodgson.

Chris Bryant, MP confirmed his commitment to making changes for people with brain injury by improving access to neurorehablitation for adults and children. He also spoke of his disappointment in sports bodies for their poor management of concussion and said that he would not sleep until the recommendations of the APPG Report: Acquired Brain Injury and Neurorehabilitation: Time for Change were taken forward.

Speeches were also made by Liz Twist, MP, Sir John Hayes, MP, Sharon Hodgson, MP and John Glen, MP.

Chloë Hayward thanked all those who attended for their support and for making the time to develop relationships with MPs. She said ‘I am so pleased to see so many charities, universities and professional organisations here today. It is only by collaborating that we will make a real difference.’

Representatives from The Child Brain Injury Trust, The Children’s Trust, Brainbox, Brain Injury Touchpoint, SameYou, Headway and many regional Headway Groups attended – many had invited their MPs and were able to discuss specific issues with them.

The British Society of Rehabilitation Medicine, The British Psychological Society and the Royal College of Psychiatrists were also at the event.

The United Kingdom Acquired Brain Injury Forum and the APPG for ABI are developing their response to the government’s feedback to the report; Acquired Brain Injury and Neurorehabilitation: Time for Change and will be developing a strategy to take the recommendations forward.
