New Care Provision for ABI
A flurry of new centres have opened or plan to open their doors over the coming months. In this issue we focus on five centres at St Andrews, Northampton, Hothfield Manor in Kent, the East Midlands Centre for Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation in Warwick, St Cyrils in Warrington and the new Neville Childhood Epilepsy Centre.
St Andrew’s Healthcare is launching the first dedicated service for adolescents with challenging behaviour following a brain injury – The Acquired Brain Injury Service for Young People. The new residential rehabilitation unit will facilitate the recovery of young people with acquired brain injury who as a result experience emotional difficulties and challenging behaviour in addition to physical health care problems.
The new Young Persons Service which opens to admissions in November 2010 will be the first service in the UK that is dedicated solely for the rehabilitation of adolescents who have challenging behaviour following a brain injury. The service is dedicated to in-patient care and rehabilitation following brain injury. It is built to low secure standards. There are a total of 12 beds on the new adolescent unit, including a number of rooms which can accommodate physically disabled patients. The service is currently open to referrals and the team will carry out assessments with a view to admission later this year.

This residential rehabilitation service will facilitate the recovery of young people from age 13 who have acquired a brain injury causing serious behavioural problems and subsequent impact on their mental and physical health. Treatment is delivered by an interdisciplinary team including doctors, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, dieticians and teachers. There are onsite Ofsted inspected school facilities to allow children to pursue their education at the same time. The service is being developed following a £2million refurbishment of one of the existing wards.

Rehabilitation at NCYPE
The new Neville Childhood Epilepsy Centre at the National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy (NCYPE) hosts a wide range of diagnostic, assessment and rehabilitation services for young people aged three to 19 with epilepsy and other neurological conditions.
A
t the Centre on the NCYPE’s Surrey campus, a multidisciplinary service is provided for children and young people who have sustained a brain injury (either through accident or illness) or who have undergone neurosurgery. The service is also available to help individuals whose underlying medical condition has deteriorated and who require a period of intensive support to regain or improve skills.
The aim is to provide the highest standard of care and treatment, working towards restoring lost skills, encouraging alternative skills and preventing other problems developing throughout the recovery. The treatment programme aims to improve physical and cognitive function, communication, self esteem and emotional wellbeing, oro-motor and feeding skills and also those needed for daily living including recreation and vocational skills.
Discharge planning commences after initial assessment and involves the child, family, advocate and relevant agencies in order to facilitate successful transition. Part of the programme may include supporting the child as they are integrated into full-time education and may involve one or more therapists working with the school and local therapy teams.
The NCYPE offers follow-up support with the Outreach Practitioner. This service includes a one year follow-up.
