Peter Buckingham, Brain Injury SurvivorDetails of Lecture and PresentationPeter says:"I experienced a traumatic brain injury in December 1993. My presentation which covers my recovery , takes the form of about an hours talk supported by OHPs. I give an account of my emergence from a vegetative state and my experience of a locked-in state. I then relate how I went through a lengthy period of confusion and re-learned how to be a new Peter . I underwent active rehabilitation as a day patient at Rose Hill rehabilitation unit in Torquay (14 months) and eventually returned, full time, home to where I live in Devon with my wife and daughter. I have continued to recover with domicilary rehabilitation and am now able to present a detailed and personal account of this time including my responses to the many challenges this accident has brought myself and my family. I have presented this talk at both Headway and BIRT annual conferences. I have also made my presentation to Headway in Melbourne Australia plus various Headway branches , trainee Clinical Psychologists , OTs and Nursing staff around UK . Feedback has always been excellent which can be checked by reference to Headway and BIRT. I am very keen to talk to anybody , anywhere to make them more aware of the misconceptions that are commonly experienced by brain injured people. " Review of Peter's Lecture "Peter has presented as a speaker for the Brain Injury Trust on a number of occasions. At our Round Hole, Square Pegs Conference, which was well attended, he was interesting, moving, and articulate. The anecdotal information he gave was brilliant. He is the expert in educating people about the effects of acquired brain injury. His specialty is getting the audience to participate and they were a varied group, from local communities, health and social sectors. Many thanks to Peter and we look forward to working with him again in future."
