Motivational Interviewing: enhancing motivation and behaviour change after brain injury
| Date: |
Mon, 14 June 2010, 10:30 - 17:30
|
| Description: |
Who the course is for:
This introductory day will be of benefit to all Brain Injury Case Managers, and is relevant to all staff whose work involves complex behaviour change. It is applicable to occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists, nurses, specialist support workers and all health and socialcare professionals.
Motivational Interviewing (MI):
MI is an evidence based approach to working with clients who are resistant to, or ambivalent about behaviour change. It is a highly effective approach that has been researched in multiple settings and for a wide array of behavioural issues. Deeply respectful, it helps clinicians to evoke a client’s internal resources for change whilst at the same time building effective commitment to more adaptive behaviours over time.
Cognitive functioning:
When cognitive functioning is an issue, many other factors can further impact upon the ability of clinical staff to help facilitate change. This course also looks at how to adapt MI when working with clients with varying levels of cognitive ability.
After attending this course you will know:
• Why traditional approaches to increasing client motivation often fail
• The key therapy skills that significantly increase client engagement in treatment, be this in the community, a hospital, or a secure setting
• What really strengthens behaviour change over time: not only clients’ behaviour but your’s too!
• How to engage and work collaboratively with even highly resistant clients
• Client language that actually predicts behaviour change
• The major cognitive strengths nearly all clients retain, and how to use these to greatly improve client recall and learning
