What is UKABIF?

The United Kingdom Acquired Brain Injury Forum (UKABIF) is a not-for-profit coalition of organisations and individuals that seeks to promote understanding of all aspects of Acquired Brain Injury and to provide information and expert input to policy makers, service providers and the general public to promote the interests of brain injured people and their families

The Forum encourages the development of good practice by setting up working parties and conferences to discuss any aspect of acquired brain injury. The Forum addresses prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, health, social welfare, education, housing, vocational and occupational work, financial, legal, civil rights, ethnic and other issues in which brain injured people and their carers require representation.

What is Acquired Brain Injury?

Acquired Brain Injury is non-degenerative injury to the brain that has occurred since birth. It can be caused by an external physical force or by metabolic derangement. The term 'acquired brain injury' includes traumatic brain injuries - such as open or closed head injuries-, or non-traumatic brain injuries - such as those caused by strokes and other vascular accidents, tumours, infectious diseases, hypoxia, metabolic disorders (e.g. liver and kidney diseases or diabetic coma) and toxic products taken into the body through inhalation or ingestion.

What does UKABIF do?

UKABIF's principle means of furthering its objectives is through researching and debating issues, identifying priorities, developing strategies for reform and raising awareness through publications and conferences..

UKABIF is effective by:

Provide expert opinion, based on evidence-based medicine/management, on acquired brain injury

Provide authoritative information to policy makers and national working parties or committees

b) Stimulating debate between members and other relevant organisations. This includes organising conferences, running regional groups and producing position papers on relevant topics.

c) Providing briefings to the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Acquired Brain Injury and other policy-making bodies on topics relevant to acquired brain injury.
